Our Approach
Thomson Group was formed in August 2012 to provide cost-competitive engineering and management services to clients throughout the Bay of Plenty and wider New Zealand. We focus primarily on electrical and controls infrastructure, with services ranging from small site electrical audits through to total turnkey, multidisciplinary solutions.
Founder and Director Paul Thomson brings a wealth of international consulting experience across the steel, pulp & paper, water/wastewater and telecommunications sectors. Around that experience he has grown a motivated, solutions-driven team of engineers who thrive on being immersed within their projects.

Full electrical design, specification, tender management and construction supervision for commercial or industrial distribution and appliance fit-outs.
Stand-in management services to support organisations through periods of resource constraint, including interim electrical facilities management.
Selected Projects
Thirteen documented engagements, delivered for district health boards, councils and industrial clients across the Bay of Plenty and New Zealand.
Thomson Group and BECA acted as the DHB representative Engineer for this $2.8 million life-safety project. The work re-configured two existing non-synchronised generators and incorporated a new 1.25 MVA third unit — all while maintaining emergency backup power throughout the changeover.
The result gives the campus a fully synchronised 3.2 MVA of backup generation across three generators, with the flexibility to take one offline at a time for regular servicing.
Visual audits of school electrical infrastructure feeding into 10-Year Property Plan high-level reports for Ministry forward planning. Each audit delivers an executive brief, distribution-board layout and single-line diagram.
Schools audited include Otumoetai Intermediate, Tauranga Intermediate, Whakatane High School, Pyes Pa, Welcome Bay, Maungatapu, Kaimai, Pahoia and more.

Stand-in electrical facilities management for the Tauranga Hospital Campus over two eight-month periods, covering all site electrical infrastructure and resources while a permanent manager was recruited.

Design and programming of an upgraded pallet strapping conveyor and control system for the Te Puke EastPack packhouse.

Provision of a submains feed and generator backup feed for a new council IT data centre, ensuring resilient power for critical infrastructure.

Upgrade of the existing three-waters (fresh, waste and storm water) SCADA system for greater functionality and improved telemetry network reliability.

Electrical works for the installation of a new Computed Tomography machine within the hospital Radiology Department.

Design and programming of a control system to manage automated fuel transfer between a 10,000 L and a 25,000 L tank serving hospital generation.
